Department of Labor Apprenticeship program

The US Department of Labor runs a program known as the Office of Apprenticeship Training, Employer and Labor Services (OATELS) which works with individuals and companies to establish individuals as apprentices in various industries. There are over 1,000 different career areas with these among the top choices:
  • Able seaman
  • Carpenter
  • Chef
  • Child care development specialist
  • Construction craft laborer
  • Dental assistant
  • Electrician
  • Elevator constructor
  • Fire medic
  • Law enforcement agent
  • Over-the-road truck driver
  • Pipefitter
While these might not seem interesting (and some might be too anxiety provoking for ASD folk) it is worth checking the program out. If you are interested you can go to Get Started and click on Apprentices. Requirements vary but are usually not too onerous. I had an uncle who did not graduate from high school qualify for an electricians apprenticeship through this program.
